New Scientist Online reported earlier that a probe had landed back down on earch from it’s trip up into space. It tracked down a comet and collected some space dust. Scientists will begin to make the long assessment of the particle dust within the samples collected.
Now I was thinking, wouldn’t it be cool if they found some kind of previously unidentified material. A kind of metal or mineral of high value to us as an international community. The first question would be, would NASA tell the world about their discovery? Would they tell everyone and let this new material be common knowledge? And my second wonderment is whether they would go after a comet in the hope of retrieving more of this particular material.
Now, i like the idea of number 2… and it got me thinking. Wouldn’t it be cool if the national and international space efforts put their spacey heads together in an attempt to design a device which could go after a comet and retrieve this new “space material.” Well, comet chasing sounds eternally cool to me, and I can just imagine a giant space craft zooming around the universe with a gigantic net trying to catch and retrieve a comet for the good of mankind.
