Industrial Design MA

Posted on Monday 13 March 2006

My girlfriend wrote a fabulous post on her blog about what she thinks an MA Industrial Design course should be about, or rather what it shouldn’t be about.

I thought that I would just jot down my public thoughts before visiting an open day tomorrow which I am a little skeptical about.

For me, Industrial Designers should be able to step into the shoes of the intended user of a product, system or service and see what needs to be changed from their point of view. I am a firm believer in “Form Follows Function” (!) and although I do not believe that form is without purpose I stand by my belief in design solving practical problems, innovatively.

So when having a look at the MA Industrial Design course at Central St Martins I was shocked, genuinely, about the focus of the course more towards the individual style of the designer participating in the course. Using Mac’s instead of PC’s also intrigued me because of the vast amount of industry work which is done using PC’s. The outline of the course sounds something more like Graphic Design than Industrial Design.

But alas, I will enter the open day tomorrow with an open mind, ready to stumble onto what a great course it is. I’m also intrigued about the taster session during the afternoon. It sounds a little different to many other open days i have been on, but i’m sure it will be an experience.
