A few weeks back whilst I was in London visiting my girlfriend and the Central St Martins Industrial Design degree course open day we happened across a bookshop called Magma. If you have ever wanted to find a bookshop completely relevant (or as relevant as possible) to your industry then this book totally fits the designer, photographer, animation enthusiast and the graphic or illustrative artist.
“Absolutely awesome” was the most likely exclamation when we found it!
But quite simply this bookshop holds a huge variety of up-to-date books and magazines, along with a few DVD’s, Posters and the kind of Japanese rubbish or British tat you find littered all over the purchase counter. Aside from the tat on the counter there was plenty of other things to keep us entertained.
Magazines like Icon, Design Week and Form, books covering anything from a whole subject down to sub-genre’s and specific focuses upon practicing designers. Anything which you might usually have difficulty finding in your regular Waterstones. Droog Design, Guerilla Advertising, Industrial Design, Graphic Language, Character Animation, Communication or Charles and Ray Eames, it’s got it all!
One of the favourite pick-ups for me on the day was the book “FUCK this book” by Bodhi Oser. An awesome compilation of images of street signage where stickers containing the word “FUCK” have replaced certain other words. Possibly one of the most amusing books I have come across in a while. I didn’t feel the need to buy the book, however I’m sure if I return I will have to invest!
I also like the way on their mailing list they have “Design” separate from “Graphic Design” although technically “Design” does in fact cover “Graphic Design!”
So if you fancy taking a look, there are two bookshops in London. One is in Clerkenwell (117-119 Clerkenwell Road) and the other is in Covent Garden (8 Earlham Street). I thoroughly reccomend it!
