Clifton Crossing Competition 2006

Posted on Friday 14 April 2006

A little while ago an email spun around the office asking if there was anyone interested in taking part in the “Clifton Crossing Competition 2006.” As I don’t really know much about bridge design I thought this would be a great chance for me to take part in the designing of a bridge. I hoped to learn as much about the technical approach for bridge design as I could put in on the creative, innovative and “design thinking” side of the design brief.

How Would You Bridge The Gap?

Now, the design brief asked entrants to design a bridge based on an updated version of the original brief set for the original competition. Although the 200 year anniversary celebrates the year in which Isambard Kingdom Brunel was born, the bridge was actually not completed until after his death!

So, for the month leading up to the 9th of April (closing date) a group of four of us have been putting together what we hope is the winning entry. Of course it had to be radical and ingenious and challenge the norms of what most people would enter, but could it be classed as bridge design?

Well, i’m going to wait until the announcement of the winner before posting up any more information about the design that we entered, but I shall do if not or even if successful giving a little more information about the project details, inspiration and teamwork involved.
