Design Internships - Not Just Valuable for Design Students!

Julien Macdonald

The mugshot on the right belongs to a guy called Julien Macdonald. Now, i must confess, until the other day i really hadn’t heard of him. He is a well known fashion designer. I’m not really sure whether I have seen any of his work before or not, but from what i have seen in the last few days, he is probably quite good.

I was having a look through ebay and i came accross the NSPCC Dream Auction. Even when i saw the section titled ‘careers’ i thought that this could be a bit of a strange auction. Under the category there are a few internships listed and one of them is the chance for a 1 week internship at Julian Macdonald’s studio.

So, you get a week with a famous fashion designer who, it seems, is quite good.

“A one week internship at the studio of cutting edge designer Julien MacDonald - just appointed to run the legendary Paris house of Givenchy. This offer is a sort of miracle – it just never happens. The lucky winner will have the best headstart ever after a week with this extraordinarily talented designer.”

I don’t have a problem with fashion designers, and i really like the idea of internships. Internships can provide the basis for successful careers, exciting opportunities and long term learning in a particular field. Internships in the right place can obviously have their advantages.

Design internships aren’t available by the thousand, in fact there aren’t many around at all, and the competition for any design internships, work experience (paid or otherwise) or design jobs which require a low amount of experience is quite high. So it kind of dissapointed me and shocked me when i found the 1-week internship at Julian Macdonald’s studio for sale on ebay. You might be saying “yeah, but it’s for charity.”

I don’t think that the kind of designer who will buy the internship will be the right kind of intern who will benifit from the experience. At last glance, the value of the item is at £2,150.00 and thats with 3 days and 21 hours remaining. I will be incredibly interested to see how much the internship goes for in the end. What ever the price, it will be far beyond the affordability of any regular intern.
