I was interested to see that in one of the regular emails which popped into my inbox from Business Week Online there was an interesting article about a new lamp which was being released later this year by Herman Miller.
The new lamp is dubbed the leaf lamp and it’s interesting to see that this product seems to have been in development since 2000. Yves Behar is the design master behind the project and also the founder of fuseproject. The article cites that the technology that is used within the product has only recently become a true usable product, and it seems that Behar’s aim with the project is more emotional and cultural as people bring work home and take home comforts into work.
Whilst i was at university, there were a few people who were playing with the idea of lighting design using LED’s and many of the ideas seemed to make fortunate use of their compactability and created these slender looking lights, or lights with minimal attachments to the end. It does seem that LED’s not only allow the energy friendly approach to lighting design but also allow for a much more compact design. The design of this leaf lamp could have been much much smaller .
I poked around at the LED manufacturers website and i found one thing about their “sales technique” which i really liked. Within the product details PDF I think that the last few pages are the best. The pages depict quite specifically how the LED’s will be packed and how they will be labled when they are sent to you. Excellent!!
As of yet i am not certain i like the design. There is a kind of broken feel to it for me. It’s the kind of shape you get from a bit of metal when it deforms, bends or breaks when you least expect it to! But i am pretty sure the design will grow on me. Will it be another classic from Herman Miller?
