Looking Forward: Middlesex Bound

Posted on Sunday 16 July 2006

Back in January i applied to the Royal College of Art’s MA Industrial Design Engineering programme of study which is a two year masters course. After being accepted for an interview and then not getting through onto the course I was a little dismayed at the decision.

Since then I have looked into other avenues of study and found one which is a little more suited to me. The MSc Design Engineering course at Middlesex University seems to be a little more directed to someone of my background. The course is aimed at graduates from arts-based design courses wishing to add to their repertiore of skills by taking an intensive year long study and become design engineers.

The MSc Design Engineering facilities seem abundant and full of learning possibilities. The course is definately aimed at people like me and as an added bonus the course fees are paid for by the EPSRC. In comparison to the RCA’s course, whose aim is to add the creative element to engineers, this course at middlesex aims to add the technical engineering skills onto designers.

Last Tuesday (11th July) i went up for an interview, had a look around the facilities and met the course leader. The environment seems very workable and the tutors seem like funny guys! I think a lot can be achieved there! I’ll be heading up for the first day of study on the 18th of September for an intensive 3 month engineering experience. After which will be a placement for between three and six months, followed by a three month 15,000 word thesis based upon the placement.

So, a lot to prepare for September, but i’m looking forward to it!
