ss Great Britain - Air Handling Illustration

ss Great Britain, Bristol - AHU Monitor

At a visit to the ss Great Britain this weekend with a work colleague, I think i was a little more interested in the Air Handling Unit than i otherwise would have been. But if you take the time to have a little look it is indeed interesting.

The display of the information and the little diagrams and animated illustrations was a neat and simple way of presenting this information in a way that anyone could understand. Of course you have to know what all the information means to understand it, but for a layman it’s a great way to be able to understand the workings in a simple way.

It’s similar to some of the work I do at the moment, however this is going inside a specific piece of building services equipment rather than showing how the equipment is mapped around a building.

The unit looks a little different from the outside, but the windows help to correlate between the inside workings and the illustration. Here’s a picture of the actual unit (note the ship on the left):

My friend explained to me that the humidity of the environment had to be kept below 20% rH to prevent corrosion. Other preservatives and applications could not be used because of the amount of salt which has been absorbed into the ship over time. Dehumidified air is passed past the base of the ship and collected at height.
