So, it’s week number three at Middlesex University. For all those who might be wondering how i might be getting on, the answer is “pretty well… so far!”
The first week seemed to involve a fair amount of hanging around and waiting for inductions, introductions and placement talks which was interesting but a little confusing after I expected an intenst introduction to engineering! Ah well, probably a good thing that there wasn’t too much learning as i needed a little break inbetween hard work and hard study.
Now the course seems to have got underway and we have three major tasks. Number one is locating a placement from 5th February 2007 for 3 to 6 months. Number two is a mini IKEA project involving combining two products into a product with a new use completely. And number three is a Manufacturing Processes and Materials module assignment.
The IKEA project requires a presentation and a new product, the materials one demands a 1500 word report on the dissasembly of a product (i chose a stapler) and the placement is really up to me. I’m looking for something along the lines of sustainable engineering. Learning how to make use of the earths resources better sounds like an extremely interesting way to spend six months!
I’ll be sure to post up project results and exciting turns of events as and when they happen! Until then, here are some pictures!!
More coming soon…

Course sounds good and the campus looks amazing. So why the stapler?
Well I dunno, i thought that there would be an interesting mix of materials within the product. It turns out that most of it is written on the underside of the top handle and the metals are coated in so many different metals it’s going to be hard to work out exactly what they are. But it’s still got some interesting manufacturing techniques in there!
